Popular attractions
Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen, literally means the Gate of Heavenly Peace, is a large plaza near the center of Beijing. It covers an area of 44 hectares, big enough to hold one million people. It has great cultural significance as a symbol because it was the site of several key events in Chinese history.

Forbidden City
The Forbidden City, also called Palace Museum or Gugong in Chinese, is located in the middle of Beijing. Built from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 surviving buildings with 8,707 bays of rooms and covers 720,000 square meters. For almost five centuries, it served as the home of the Emperor and his household, as well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government.

Beijing National Stadium
It is also known as the National Stadium, or colloquially as the Bird's Nest, which was designed for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. Located in the Olympic Green, the US$423 million stadium is the world's largest steel structure.

Water Cube
It is an aquatics center that was built alongside Beijing National Stadium in the Olympic Green for the swimming competitions of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Despite its nickname, the building is a cuboid (rectangular box), not a cube.
